The University of the West of Scotland has two exciting opportunities available to join the academic team within the School of Science and Sport:

 

The School of Science & Sport is a multidisciplinary school, with a diverse range of programmes delivered at Ayr, Lanarkshire, Paisley, and London campuses and a combined total of circa 1600 students. Both teaching and research are at the heart of all of the School’s activities. With NSS teaching scores and a successful REF2014 UWS is looking to build and diversify our portfolio in programmes and research.

UWS welcomes applications from enthusiastic and motivated individuals, who are well versed in contemporary learning methods, you will also be able to contribute to curricular renovations to include development and delivery of blended and distance learning at undergraduate and potentially postgraduate level.

Board elections coming up in September in Malmö

Become an EASM Board Member

At the Annual General Meeting in Malmö on September 7, 2018 there will be five board positions up for election.
The terms of Ruth Crabtree (Vice President), Aila Ahonen (Board Member), Irena Valantine
 (Board Member) and Tim Breitbarth (Board Member) will finish with the AGM. In addition, Gaby Dijkstra has resigned as a Board Member from the EASM board due to other work commitments.

It is now the chance to bring your input and ideas forward and become involved as part of the EASM Board. Interesting projects, challenges, and events will await the new board members, and will connect you further with the diverse world of sport management. Results of the member’s survey now published

Following the membership survey concerning the charters & by-laws EASM has now released the official presentation of results. We appreciate every individual contribution to this important topic.

First consultancy was conducted with Paul Jonson as external advisor during the recent Executive Committee Board meeting in April and the Executive Committee will now seek the full mandate of the EASM board during the meeting in June.
We aim to publish the final draft for the proposed new Charters & By-laws by the end of June 2018 to be actioned in 2019.

Professor of Sport Ecology

The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching. The Faculty of Cultural Studies at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a Professor of Sport Ecology.

This is a permanent civil service position in the scope of the “Bayreuth Track” programme. The postholder may be promoted to the W3 level upon successful performance review of research and teaching in accordance with the Bayreuth Track Personnel Development Model for professors at the University of Bayreuth.

Applicants should focus on the interplay between sports and the environment, explaining their role in society and their economic importance (ecosystem services, developing sports facilities, and sports tourism). The focus is on integrating all aspects of sustainability (ecological, social, and economic) into the field of sports. The professorship serves as an interdisciplinary bridge between environmental science, sports science, and economics. The incumbent will be required to contribute to the focus area Ecology & Environmental Sciences, represented by BayCEER. He or she will also be expected to be involved in at least one of the University of Bayreuth’s so-called “emerging fields”.

The incumbent will have a successful record of publishing in international journals and in acquiring external funding. He or she will be expected to have a thorough understanding of interrelationships in landscape ecology and some connection to sport science. He or she will also be required to contribute to the conceptual work involved in further developing the degree programmes in Sport, Business & Law (M.Sc. and B.Sc.) as well as advanced courses in sport ecology, some of which are also offered as part of degree programmes in environmental science.

Requirements for this position (according to Article 7 and Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG) are a university degree, doctoral degree, Habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification), and proven excellence in teaching. Evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. The ability to teach in the English language is expected. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG).

Alberto Madella Scholarship

The Scholarship Fund of 500 Euros is designed to support colleagues to participate in the 2018 EASM conference and/or EASM Student Seminar or EASM PhD Student Seminar. The Scholarship Committee will make decisions based on participants’ needs and plans for contributing to the conference. The award is highly competitive and only well-developed proposals will be considered.

Take this opportunity to be part of the Networking Platform that EASM will offer in Malmö this year.

Good Governance is centre of new Erasmus+ Project

With great success, UCLan Cyprus hosted the inaugural meeting of the “Good Governance Enhancement through e-Learning for Sport Volunteer Board Members” (GReFORM) Erasmus+ project, in Larnaca on 14-15 February 2018.

The project coordinator is Cyprus Sport Organization (CSO), while the EASM is a full partner. The total funding of this Erasmus+ program is €419,000 and will last for 3 years (2018-2020). The project involves 11 partners from seven EU Member States (Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, The Netherlands, Lithuania and Cyprus). The consortium of project partners includes national and European sports organizations as well as academic institutions.

At the press conference that followed the inaugural meeting, the Assistant Professor at UCLan Cyprus, Co-Director of CEDAR, EASM Member, and Research Coordinator of the program in question, Dr. Christos Anagnostopoulos, said that “those who govern our high profile sport organisations have been the subject of much media scrutiny, thereby rendering good governance as one of the greatest challenges in modern sport; the prime aim of this program is towards capacity building (via educational means) within the Boards so these volunteers practically respond to such a challenge”.

At this inaugural meeting, EASM was represented by its General Secretary Dr. Stefan Walzel, who commented “We are proud being a full partner of this important project. Good Governance is such an important topic for managing sport organizations that EASM is not only contributing to this project, it is also developing a sport management library which of course will include the topic of good governance.”

The next Research Committee meeting will be held in Greece, at University of Patras, in November 2018.

ESMQ success continues

Impact factor

The Journal Citation Reports® were announced at the end of last week, and we’re delighted to reveal that European Sport Management Quarterly’s 2016 Impact Factor has risen to 1.778. This is a huge jump compared to the 2015 Impact Factor of 1.019.

The 2016 Impact Factor saw 96 cites, to 54 citable items. This represents close to a doubling of the number of cites, compared to the 2015 Impact Factor (53 cites), with a stable number of citable items (52).

This is by far the journal’s highest Impact Factor to date, since the journal’s first, in 2010. This Impact Factor sees the journal jump in the Hospitality, Leisure, Sport, & Tourism category, to 18 out of 45, compared to 27 out of 44 in the 2015 Impact Factor. It also places ESMQ as the second-highest Sport Management Impact Factor within the category.

 

Five Year Impact Factor

The 2016 Five-Year Impact Factor has also increased to 2.087, with 263 cites to 126 citable items, compared to the 2015 Five-Year Impact Factor of 1.290, with 160 cites to 124 citable items. The Five-Year Impact Factor also places ESMQ as the second-highest journal in Sport Management.

Board Member Posts up for election

We would like to inform all our EASM members that in September 2017, we will have four posts that are up for election at the AGM in Bern, Switzerland.  All the information regarding the application process and timeline can be found on the EASM website at www.easm.net.

The four posts consist of:  EASM President, Secretary General and also two generic Board Member positions.  The role of Treasurer is also up for re-election and it is the intention of the current role holder to go for a further term.  As the post of Secretary General is very different in nature, we have produced two separate job descriptions to outline the duties and responsibilities of the positions.

 

Applications are now open and the closing date is the 31st July, 2017.  Please also note that all candidates need to have two nominators (who are current EASM members) from two European countries and their support letters must be attached with the nomination form.

 

All completed applications (along with an electronic photo of yourself) should be sent via email to the EASM Secretary General at secretariat@easm.net    All candidate profiles will then be posted onto our website after July 31st so all members can have prior knowledge of the candidates before voting takes place at the AGM in September, 2017.

The Chelladurai Award – is a prestigious EASM award and recognises life-long achievement in the field of sport management.

Criteria: the nominee must meet the following:

  1. Have made significant contributions to the field in terms of scholarship, research, leadership, and attained peer recognition
  2. Have a minimum of ten years’ service in sport management as a teacher, researcher, administrator, or combination of thereof
  3. Must reflect EASM’s values in leadership, service, scholarship, and collegiality.
  4. Have been an EASM member in good standing of at least 10 years (in total)

 

 

The EASM Distinguished Service Award – recognises a member’s significant involvement and service to the work of EASM.  The accolade is intended to acknowledge the value and contribution made in fulfilling the aims of EASM within a voluntary capacity.

Criteria: the nominee must meet the following:

  1. Served in a voluntary capacity to help fulfil the aims of EASM within a formal, recognised role
  2. Demonstrated professionalism, collegiality and expertise whilst undertaking various roles within EASM
  3. Acted within a respectful manner, demonstrating the EASM values of inclusivity, collaboration and integrity
  4. Have been an EASM member in good standing of at least 10 years (in total)

 

 


Nomination Procedure:

The deadline for the EASM Awards is April 20th Each year.  Information required for award nomination includes:

  • Name of Nominee
  • Name of Nominator
  • Signature of Nominator and date

Nominators must be EASM members in good standing and should email the nomination to the Chair of the Award Selection Committee as appointed by the EASM Board.  This is currently Professor Tracy Taylor. The nomination must specifically describe the nominee’s accomplishments in relation to the award criteria (max 2 pages).  It is recommended that up to two letters/testimonials of support be included in the nomination. The Committee may subsequently request additional information from the nominator.  All nominations will be assessed in confidence.

 


Submission Process:

Individuals who accept their nomination will be asked to submit a CV and a two-page statement describing their qualifications for the award.  These items must be submitted no later than July 1st.

NOTE: It is expected that the Chelladurai Award recipient will deliver a scholarly lecture at the Annual EASM conference.

Play the Game: Erasmus+ funding for The Sports Governance Observer

Great news for Play the Game, the cooperative universities and all EASM-members involved: The Sports Governance Observer – a new benchmarking tool that enables national and international sports leaders to improve the governance of their federation – is now granted funding from the Erasmus+ programme for further research.

The Sports Governance Observer is a new benchmarking tool that enables national and international sports leaders to improve the governance of their federation. It is developed in cooperation with leading experts from six European universities and aimed at bringing practical change in the everyday running of sport’s organisations. The Sports Governance Observer focuses on four key areas of governance: Transparency & public communication, Democratic Processes, Checks & Balances and Solidarity.
