EASM Summer School

Are you thinking to participate in the 10th EASM Summer School in Madrid in May 2019?

Hear from the Experiences of last year’s participant Anna:

Hello! My name is Anna Semenova and I study Sport Business at JAMK University, Finland. I’m glad to share some of my experiences from the EASM Summer School, which I have attended in May 2018.

EASM Summer School 2018 was one of the most exciting experiences in my life! Never before have I met so many like-minded people in one place, who are eager to learn and become the best professionals in sport management. All Summer School participants came from different universities and countries, including Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Spain, USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Kazakhstan and Russia. The diversity of backgrounds made the learning process engaging and truly unique. Regardless of our differences, we all were united by similar attitude and passion to the sport business industry.

In 2018 the Summer School took place in Madrid – hometown of worldwide famous sport brands such as Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid. Luckily, the Summer School started on May 16th, the day when Atlético de Madrid became UEFA Europa League champions. I can’t even put into words the vibe of the city that evening!

The Summer School had a tight schedule full of lectures, case study assignment preparation, sport venues visits and, of course, cultural program. The learning process would be impossible without the keynote speakers, experienced professionals and experts in their fields. The facilities of Universidad Europea de Madrid, where the lectures and case study assignment were held, supported the learning as well. Imagine seating nearby a pond, enjoying sunny weather and working hard together with your team members from all over the world.

The last, but not the least is that we visited major sport venues in Madrid: Santiago Bernabeu, reconstructed Wanda Metropolitano, Caja Mágica and WiZink Center. It was also encouraging to see and even try the recent inventions and devices at Global Sport Innovation Center. Then, we got the second chance to enjoy views of Santiago Bernabeu stadium during the closing dinner at Real Cafe. Honestly, it was so sad to say goodbye to these amazing people I have met during this Summer School. But we stay in touch (thanks to the EASM Summer School alumni group on Facebook) and I am sure we will meet again in the future and we will be happy to tell our success stories.

To conclude, if you have an opportunity to attend the Summer School, don’t miss it! There is no better place than the EASM Summer School to meet international students alongside professionals and experts in sport management, network, visit sport venues and get valuable knowledge. All at once! Why do you still wait?

Play the Game Final Report

The National Sports Governance Observer (NSGO) study is proudly presenting its final report.

EASM is a research partner in the ‘National Sports Governance Observer: Benchmarking sports governance across national boundaries’, which is an EU funded study carried out among the most important sports federations in Belgium (Flanders), Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, and Brazil.

The project partners are convinced the report will become the reference document in its field in the years to come.

The main aim of the NSGO project was to assist and inspire national sports federations to enhance the quality of their governance by measuring governance and building capacity. It received a 383,000 euro grant from the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and further support from the Danish Parliament and the Council of Europe.

The researchers first developed the National Sports Governance Observer tool and then applied it to eight or more sports federations in the countries of the eight official and two associated external research partners.

Although the EU support expires by the end of the year, Play the Game is determined to continue and expand the use of the National Sports Governance Observer tool. The final report aims to be the stepping stone towards the inclusion of a broader group of countries in the NSGO research. Play the Game, the coordinator of the NSGO project, is currently in the process of including Australia, Canada, Colombia, Georgia, Lithuania, Peru, and the USA and invites interested parties from other countries to join the project as official partners. Terms and conditions are available on the project website: http://www.playthegame.org/

Governance research does not give us the full picture of the reality of sports organisations. The impact of rules and regulations depends at the end of the day on the human beings that administer them. But without good rules and regulations, the risks of sport being abused is much higher, as we have seen too often in the past years.

We hope and believe that the National Sports Governance Observer project will be a help in the efforts to reduce federations’ risks and increase their chances of success.

Candidates for Nominations Committee

The EASM Board is pleased to present to its members four strong applications for the EASM Nominations Committee:

Anna Gerke
Audencia Business School, Paris

I would like to put myself forward as a candidate for the EASM Nominations Committee. I have had first experience in this committee, which will be very useful to contribute and manage the tasks in the coming year.
I am very familiar with the main academic associations and journals for sport management. I have published in the three main journals and I have been participating in the major sport management conferences.
I have been now seven years in academia but consider myself still as early in my career as academic. Therefore, I would like to contribute to the EASM Nominations Committee from the perspective of a junior academic but at the same time learn from senior academics that are also part of the committee.

Elmar Guliyev

I am pleased to accept the nomination to be on the EASM Nominations Committee. I have over 30 years of experience in sport management, as an educator, researcher and in senior management and service positions. I served SMAANZ Board, including as President and SMR Editor, and I have good networks within the EASM community having served as Editor of ESMQ and Board Member. I also chaired the EASM Awards Committee for two years. I am passionate about good governance and creating opportunities for emerging scholars to be involved in service to the profession.

Mathieu Winand

LUNEX International University of Health, Exercise and Sports

Since my first EASM conference in 2009 in Amsterdam, I have been closely connected to the EASM community. I understand the objectives it pursues and the values it stands for as well as the challenges this represents, particularly in the light of my involvement in another European management conference. I see this participation to the EASM Nominations Committee as a service to the EASM community that I would do with great pleasure and altruism. I wish to contribute in an objective and transparent way of identifying and encouraging EASM Board candidates who share those EASM values and ambition.
