Submission Guidelines

Submission deadline is 17th April 2020 (23.59 CET). Abstracts submitted after the deadline will not be considered. Abstracts can be submitted online  Please see key dates related to the submission, review, registration and programming process here. Abstract submissions should be made through the ConfTool system.

Abstracts not complying with the Abstract Submission Guidelines provided on this page will bounce back before entering the review process and authors will be asked to resubmit.

Abstracts can be submitted in two categories:

  1. Scientific Abstract (including scientific work to be submitted to the Poster Session);
  2. Professional Practice Abstract (including practice contributions submitted to the Poster Session).

For an Abstract to enter the review process and be considered for presentation during the conference the following guidelines must be adhered to:

  • Length: the overall text length of an Abstract has to be between 650 and 800 words, i.e. excluding title, author names and references (maximum 6 references).
  • Text only: Abstracts should include text only, i.e. images (pictures, figures, and tables) are not accepted.
  • Title: use a brief title to clearly indicate the nature of the research/project/contribution; capitalise the first letter of each word; do not use abbreviations in the title.
  • Author names: Provide names of all authors, their institutional affiliation, and e-mail address during the online submission process.
  • Language: Abstracts have to be in English language
  • Formatting and style guide: APA tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/style/reference/tf_APA.pdf

Scientific Abstracts should be structured using the following sections *:

  1. Aim and Research Questions
  2. Theoretical Background and Literature Review
  3. Research Design, Methodology and Data Analysis
  4. Results/Findings and Discussion **
  5. Conclusion, Contribution and Implication **
  6. References (maximum 6; to be entered in extra box during the submission process)

* The structure should only be altered if clearly justified by the nature of the submission and contribution (e.g. conceptual work).** In case that the results/findings for a Scientific Abstract are not yet available at the time of Abstract submission, authors have to mention this by guaranteeing that they have the results by the time of the conference. They should provide a preview of the nature of the results/findings as well as envisioned contribution/implications.

For Professional Practice Abstracts the following sections are recommended ***:

  1. Statement that Abstract relates to professional practice (mandatory)
  2. Aim
  3. Purpose and Background
  4. Design and Implementation
  5. Outputs/Outcomes, Reflections and Future Development
  6. References (if applicable)

***In addition, such a structure might better work for scholarly contributions towards the Parallel Sessions ‘Sport Management Education’ and ‘Sport Law and Ethics’ if they are not concerned with scientific/empirical research in a common sense. For example, sport management education contributions might be concerned with innovative approaches to curriculum development, learning environments and (higher) education management/policy (yet, please keep in mind that your Abstract should not be a sales pitch for a certain program, but rather a discussion of ‘best practices’ and sharing learnings that other members of the EASM community may find inspiring and useful).

Importantly, please note the following conference policy:

  • Author restrictions: maximum of 1 paper first-authored and 3 papers co-authored.
  • Presenter restrictions: maximum of 2 presentations per participant; the presenting author (as indicated and – if needed – updated in the system by the submitting author) must have registered and paid the conference fee by 13 July to avoid exclusion from conference programme and book of abstracts

Additional Submission Requirements Relating to Conference Awards

Submission requirements for Short Papers/the EASM Best Conference Paper Award 2020 are available here.
Submission requirements for the ESMQ New Research Award 2020 are available here.

The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) is the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector, committed to supporting, developing and enabling professionals and organisations to succeed and, as a result, inspire our nation to become more active. CIMSPA is the guardian of a single professional and apprenticeships standards framework for the sport and physical activity sector in the UK. This standards framework is driving the development of quality education products for our workforce, and allowing employers the ability to easily assess which job roles an individual is qualified for.

The standards framework is also being used to develop career maps which offer individuals realistic expectations of job prospects, with clear signalling on what training is required to transition through the pathway and meet their ambitions. Over 30 professional and apprenticeship standards have already been completed or are in development, across exercise and fitness, leisure operations, coaching, community sport management and health.

Management standards have been developed for aspiring managers, entry manager and general managers with an increasing number of UK Universities becoming Higher Educations Partners and aligning degrees to the employer led standards and achieving formal endorsement.

An employer led senior management standard has now been developed with draft knowledge, skills and behaviour requirements of top managers and executives in the sector. CIMSPA would like to invite academic colleagues to impact and shape these standards before they are finalised.

ESMQ Journal Quality Rated A

Dear EASM members,

I am pleased to announce that European Sport Management Quarterly (ESMQ) has improved from a B to an A on the Australian Business Dean Council’s (ABDC) journal quality list. This is a position that we now share with Sport Management Review and the Journal of Sport Management. To recall, as well, all of these three Sport Management journals now have an IF above 2. This is great news for the field of Sport Management. I extend my thanks to Tracy Taylor – known to some of you – for making the case for ESMQ and, of course, to both Board and reviewer colleagues whose hard work underpins this further development of the journal’s external recognition. Details of the list can be found at

https://abdc.edu.au/research/abdc-journal-list/

Best wishes,

Prof. Paul Downward
Editor ESMQ

Call for Workshop Proposals

Call for Workshop Proposals

Deadline for submissions: 16th December 2019

The Scientific Committee of The European Sport Management Conference invites

sport management scholars and practitioners to organise Workshops on various subthemes

of sport management at our annual conference

28th EASM European Sport Management Conference Loughborough University London (UK),

16-19 September 2020.

Activate, Engage, Discuss and Produce Shifts Through Workshops

Workshops aim to share knowledge, encourage stimulating discussion and intellectual

engagement between participants on a particular subtheme (i.e. a specific focus within

a more general topic). Workshops can also be outcome focussed, for example to

integrate theory and practice; to build and foster networks; to channel work into

special issues in ESMQ or other journals or edited books; to shift existing fields; or

map out new sport management research territory.

Workshop organisers have to provide a design/format for their Workshops that enables

a significantly different appeal and ‘feel’ than traditional conference track topic

sessions (for track topics see past/current conference websites).

The Scientific Committee will select Workshop proposals that capture a defined subtheme;

have a clear aim; and have wide appeal to both presenters and conference

attendees. Accepted Workshops will be included in the official Call for Contributions

for the conference, which will be launched in January 2020.

Examples of Workshops organised at past conferences are available on the former

conference websites (www.easm2019.com).

Submitting Your Workshop Proposal

Parties interested in organising a Workshop should produce a document covering the

following information and email it to the EASM Scientific Chair Guillaume Bodet and

the EASM 2020 Scientific Committee, info@easm2020.com , inserting ‘Call for

Workshop Proposals’ in the email subject, by the stated deadline.

1. The sub-theme/suggested title of the proposed Workshop.

2. A short description of the relevance and aim of the proposed Workshop (max. 500

words). Please remember that the title, the aim and the description should be used

to arouse interest in the Workshop when announced in the conference Call for

Contributions and when you promote the Workshop within your own network.

3. Expected submissions to the Workshop:

a. Names of likely contributors (at least 7)

b. Communicational efforts how you intend to attract contributors to your

conference Workshop besides the general conference Call for Contributions.

4. The desired format and ‘flow’ of the Workshop

a. Please outline the point of difference from standardised track presentations

(e.g. one or a mix of the following: small symposium, panels, debates;

presentation of short/full papers and/or impact cases, focus on or mix of

practitioner/policy/academic contributors, technology-enhanced delivery,

etc.). Typically, yet dependent on the number of submissions, we allow for 2

sessions (about 160 minutes overall) in the conference programme.

b. Conveners could invite high-profile guest presenters on a complimentary dayticket

(on their own travel expenses and after discussion with the Scientific

Committee) in order to increase the appeal of the Workshop or to facilitate

theory-practice integration shall this be of benefit to the Workshop outcome

and participants’ conference experience.

5. Please mention if you are aware of any journal special issues on the topic of the

proposed Workshop with a submission date later than September 2020 or any other

output/impact Workshop participants might be able to contribute towards. Details

about the Conveners:

a. The names, institutions, email addresses, phone numbers, research fields, and

short bio (about 100 words) of all Conveners (min. 2/max. 4, representing

more than one country).

b. Indicate the name of the Lead Convener as this person will be responsible for

all communication with the Scientific Committee; be involved in the review

process of submissions to the Workshop; the coordination of contributors

(once submissions or other speakers are accepted); and the running of the

Workshop in Seville. All Conveners need to register for the conference.

c. A brief outline of the Conveners’ contribution to the topic (max. 300 words,

plus references of recent publications/outputs on the topic and/or of practical

work/impact). In addition, please refer to the history of the Workshop or

similar events if it has been hosted by you at previous conferences.

Conveners agree to prepare a brief written review of the Workshop within three weeks

after the conference (about 400 words). Reports might be published on the

conference/EASM website or used as reference for future activities.

The deadline for submitting a Workshop proposal is 16 December 2019

Proposals will be judged against the stated criteria, taking into account quality and

relevance. Only a certain number of Workshops can be considered and facilitated at

the conference.

The conference is organised in cooperation with the Loughborough University
London. Please visit www.easm2020.com for information about this leading
international conference, yet again held in a wonderful location.
