EASM Conference Announcement

EASM 2021 Conference Format Adapted Due To The Global Pandemic

Dear EASM community,

We hope you are all keeping healthy and having a strong start to 2021.

As the global COVID19 situation has developed, we have had to reflect on the feasibility and viability of our community meeting this year. Taking multiple factors into consideration, we have come to an agreement with Loughborough University that the London 2021 conference will not take place.

“We would have loved to host the EASM conference in London this year, but the unpredictability is too high, making it impossible to plan such an event in a professional way and with the highest standards we are aiming for”, said Prof. James Skinner, head of the local organising committee.

EASM President Vassil Girginov thanks James Skinner, Emily Hayday and the entire team for the efforts they invested in this event: “I am incredibly sorry for the colleagues who have worked with great commitment and passion over a long period of time to make this event possible. I very much hope that we can welcome the EASM community to a conference at Loughborough University London in the near future.”

In light of this, the EASM Board has begun preparing a digital format so our community can meet again. We will publish the timeline for the 2021 EASM virtual gathering on Wednesday, 24thFebruary 2021 and will keep the community informed on the next steps of this virtual event.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Global Classroom – First Session Recording

Engineering in general and Information Technology in particular are important in the support for many activities directly or indirectly related to sport sciences, including improvement of physical activities, sports medicine, biotechnology and nutrition, sports management, and all other application areas in sports. This conference intends to be a meeting point for both academics, sport professionals and practitioners to exchange ideas and develop synergies.

Submissions Open: Prince Faisal Bin Fahad Award for Sports Research

The Leaders Development Institute of Saudi Arabia is inviting submissions to the Prince Faisal Bin Fahad Award for Sports Research

The Prince Faisal bin Fahad Award is an international research grant program targeted at sports research projects related to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Award aims to support rigorous, intellectually ambitious, and technically sound research that is relevant to the most pressing questions and compelling opportunities in sports. We seek to financially support scholarly work that develops new foundational knowledge or build upon existing knowledge, that may have a lasting impact on the sports discourse. The Award will allow researchers to apply for funding of USD 80’000 to USD 120’000 to support their research. A total of USD 1,000,000 will be awarded.

The Leaders Development Institute oversees the award, and is an educational institution operating under the Ministry of Sports of Saudi Arabia, and is committed to developing the sports sector through research, innovation, and education. The Award is one of the initiatives of the Quality of Life Program, operating under Vision 2030.

Impulse Summit 2020

The Impulse Network is run by the Sports Business Club at the University of St. Gallen. A team of volunteering students offers students of the sports industry a non-profit platform to take part in an international and inter-generational exchange to shape the future of the industry; bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical experience in the sports business.

The event took place between the 26th and 30th October. EASM initiated a collaboration, where we had the chance to select a student member for the online event this year. We were looking for eager young minds, willing to challenge the status quo of the sports industry. The only requirement was to be an EASM student member.

Ben Decker was selected and this is his account of the experience.

My experiences at the Impulse Summit 2020

“At the end of October I was chosen to represent the EASM as a challenger at the prestigious „Impulse Summit 2020“ organized by the Sport Business Club of St. Gallen.

After a lot of preparation beforehand I was part of the discussion „Investment in football“ lead by a panel of experts of the sport industry. I gained a lot of important insights and was impressed by the honest and straightforward statements made by the experts. After the official session has ended, it was great to have an open and exclusive discussion in a private session afterwards. This was an eye opening and game changing event where I made a lot of new contacts through different branches of the sport industry.

To be directly involved in a discussion with worldwide known experts and to know that they are very interested in our perspective as the next generation was a unique experience and an extra motivation for my studies.

I would like to thank the EASM for choosing me and giving me the chance to challenge the experts and debate some pressing topics of the sport industry.

I can highly recommend to participate at this event especially because they are planning to have a real meeting in St. Gallen next year and not an online convention.”

36th Annual NASSM Conference

3 – 5th June 2021
Race Forward: Agents for Change in Sport Management
“As the preeminent academic association for sport management research, teaching, and service, NASSM has accepted the call to action to address racial inequities within its membership and in the field of study. As noted in our statement on the death of George Floyd, in our many roles, we must seek to name and dismantle systems of oppression wherever we see them. As sport management scholars and educators, we are particularly attuned to the great successes of sport entities in moving social dialogue forward, along with the many failures. However, our silent study is not enough. In an era of growing racial tension, sport has maintained its front-and-center position as a space of protest and counter-protest. Sport management, as a discipline, must more fully explore the many ways the management and marketing of sport affect and are affected by race and racism. Hence, we call on our members to join us in working together toward a more just association, sport industry, and society at large.Accordingly, the NASSM 2021 conference theme, Race Forward: Agents for Change in Sport Management, encourages sport scholars and educators to more fully explore our role in advancing racial justice through our research, teaching, and practice. Through topical sessions, the keynote presentation, and various conference events, we hope to initiate needed conversations about how our field and association can meaningfully work towards racial justice. Throughout the conference, we encourage our colleagues to discuss ways that race, racism, and social justice efforts have affected the management and marketing of sports, to weigh how racial dynamics are discussed and experienced in our classrooms, to ponder ways in which organizational cultures and climates impact the experiences of various racial groups, or to examine the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement on sport operations. Moreover, it is our hope that NASSM members will discuss our responsibilities as scholars and educators in this space, and advance evidence-based actions and initiatives we can employ to promote anti-racist ideals in our field.

Similar to past conferences, NASSM invites individuals to submit abstracts to traditional NASSM submission categories (here). However, an additional submission category focused on the conference theme will also be available for work that aligns with the conference theme. All submitters are encouraged to consider how this theme can be applied in their research and teaching so together we can move conversations about Race Forward.

Please email conference@nassm.org if you have any questions or concerns.”

Workshop: The Future of EASM Conferences

Yesterday the EASM Board, members of the EASM Advisory Board and Local Organising Committee members of the upcoming EASM conferences met virtually to discuss the future of EASM conferences.

The aim of the workshop was to:
– Explore future scenarios given the COVID‐19 Crisis,
– Collect insights on future academic conference trends and on what attending live and digital EASM conferences means for delegates in terms of content and networking opportunities
– Develop pathways for EASM student and Ph.D. members from the EASM Summer School, the EASM Student Seminar, and the EASM Ph.D. seminar to the main conference.

We are delighted to share the three main initiatives that stemmed from this workshop and will be discussed further:
– The Future of the EASM Student Seminar
– The Sustainability Concept & Charter for EASM Conferences
– Digital, Hybrid, Analogue—the Future of EASM Conference Formats

Our community has adapted to the challenges we were faced with this year and we are delighted to be making such progress and creating new opportunities in securing the EASM Conferences’ future.
